<div dir="ltr">We just had a Family Literacy Night in November at which we hosted 9 therapy dogs. The dogs were in classrooms and the other activities were in our multipurpose room, library and meeting room. The students had to pre-sign up for a time slot. With the number of students who signed up, each student wound up being able to read and interact with the dog and its owner for 15 minutes. The students and their parents/siblings were in the classrooms with the dog, the owner and a teacher, so they had some privacy while reading. Other activities included make a bookmark, story writing, a read aloud, and a pick-a-free book station. The dogs were definitely the big hit of the night. <p class="MsoNormal">I was just wondering if anyone has ever done an event like public libraries do where they bring in therapy dogs for kids to read to. If so, how many dogs did you have? How did you structure it? (i.e. how long could each child read with
the dog…were they by themselves or were other kids or their families listening while they were reading…etc.) We are planning to do a family night in February where students can read to therapy dogs, do a craft, hear some dog-themed stories, and have a snack.
Let me know if you have done something like this and have suggestions.<u></u><u></u></p>
