I work with K-3rd graders and the nonfiction sectioned out using bookends for easier access and out of necessity for reshelving. We have approximately 800 students in the building (all 37 classes visit the library every week) so shelving Dewey and maintaining it after every class would be almost impossible.
I can send you pictures off the list if you are interested in seeing some of the categories. All the books are essentially still in Dewey order, but not within each given topic. My email address is Nclark at cusd50.org.

When teaching the students how to find call numbers, I start with a modified version of elementary librarians PowerPoint on Call Numbers. It has quite a few visuals (and I added a few additional pictures) and it uses the metaphor of a bus driver uses an address to pick up students and the library patrons use a call number to find a book on the shelf. The remaining slides review the sections of the library and how the call numbers are organized within nonfiction and fiction.

I also use shelver Mrs. Lodge's Reshelver game, a quizlet call number quiz, call number sort, and putting call number plates in order as different centers stations.

I am not sure how much time your students have in the library, but due to having 37 classes, we only have between 20-25 minutes. At least 10 of the mins. is dedicated to students searching and checking out their books.

I do a call number lesson and quiz. I also made an alphabetizing lesson, but I haven't used it yet. I do a Dewey lesson and play the game where the book has to get put back on the "shelf" in the right spot. If you have a SMART Board, let me know and I'll send you the lessons if you want. Here's the link to the Dewey game: http://web.archive.org/web/20070127034103/http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/s2s/utopia/library4/src/library4.swf?

What types of lessons do you do with students so they understand these concepts? I am noticing this really K-12, so all types of lessons are welcome.
