For the last 10 years, Batavia High School has had a Summer Reading program
based on the following guiding principles:

--Select 3-4 high-interest, appealing books for each grade level. Involve
students & teachers in the book selection.

--Target one class at each grade level to involve the book in a classroom
activity, not necessarily a test. CurrentAmerily the targeted classes are
English I, English II, American History, Government.

--Identify a theme/essential question for the books to connect with based
on the content of the targeted class.

--Send 35 copies of each book to the Batavia Public Library for students to
check out. (This is a great collaborative effort with our public library
that has the added benefit of getting students into the public library
during the summer!)

--Our slogan is We Pick 1, You Pick 2. One book is required for Summer
Reading, but students who read just 2 more can earn incentive prizes from
the public library's Summer Reading program. (Again, a big shout out to
Batavia Public Library for working with us!)

--Promotional activities include the following:

   - Every parent and student gets an email about the Summer Reading
   requirement, the public library connections.
   - We visit the middle school and do a booktalk/PowePoint for all 8th
graders. This is also a chance to welcome students to the library.
   - We also do in-person booktalks that reach about 50% of current high
   school students.
   - Provide information to the Guidance office for new students
   - Web site Q&A page, LRC displays, & tweets

Working to keep teachers in targeted classes aware and involved is critical
for the program's success. This is especially true when teachers change
schedules each year.

Also, Diane Mankowski Diane_Mankowski at glenbard.org recently posted a great
activity list that might be helpful for identifying interesting activities:

   - Here's a website with all of our Indy Read project options that some
teachers at Glenbard South offer to students for the freshmen and sophomore
   levels.
