[ISLMA-Share] silent reading

[Email list for the Illinois School Library Media Association]

Each class period has a "shelf marker sheriff."  This student carries a
clipboard and writes down names of students using poor library and shelf
marker manners.  I do not hesitate to take away their library privilege for
that week if the behavior warrants it.  I also use assigned seating to keep
certain students away from each other.

I have also used a NOISE board.  I place the letters N O I S E on a
whiteboard.  When the noise level gets too loud I start removing a letter
starting from the E.  If there is only a NO left, that means NO book for
the class.  When they are working together for the goal of checking out
books, they rarely get to NO.
