For some students, money is the reason they won't bring back late books and
fines just continue to grow. A few years ago I began giving the options
to donate nonperishable items (1 = $1) to us for the local food pantry or
doing "library chores" to pay off fines. Those options have increased the
number of students taking care of their debts, and they are welcome before
or after school.

So far today, one student emptied a display case for me while another
dusted Fiction M-Z. The closer we get to the end of the year, the more
help we'll need with inventory, changing bulletin boards and display cases,
and preparing brochures for August's opening day and parent night. I have
two dozen cans of food from Aldi to deliver to the food pantry tomorrow.
