I've been creating quizzes on Quia for both the Bluestem and Monarch for years. Five questions for the Bluestems and four for the Monarchs. The questions are multiple choice and they are allowed to use the book (since that is a skill we also teach-how to access information). Since we have a lot of second language learners we will also read them the quiz if they ask, since the book may have been read to them. The students enjoy the system. I've already had three students taking Bluestem quizzes!

Each book has an assignment where the students have to write a short reflection about one aspect of the book, i.e. what effect the setting has on the story, what adversity did the main character have to overcome, etc... Kids write and turn it in and I can then check them off as having completed it.

In the past, I have just taken students word for what book they have actually read. However, I suspiciously had quite a few students read a number of them the last week or so before the deadline. I am just curious if anyone has a creative way to find out if the students actually read the books they claim to.
