[aisle] Catholic High Schools - The Hate U Give

Dear AISLE Colleagues,
If you didn’t see it, I would like to share a Knowledge Quest blog post about The Hate U Give that was published today by Jennifer Sturge, a Maryland district-level library supervisor.

https://knowledgequest.aasl.org/the-school-wide-love-for-the-hate-u-give/

In the post, Jen shares how the English teacher organized the discussion and provides strategies for future library-centered literature discussions.

I believe that the context in which books are shared and discussed makes all the difference.

A bit about me: I am a new member of the list. I have recently returned to teaching courses in school and public librarianship for the iSchool. I live in Tucson, Arizona, and teach 100% online. I look forward to learning from you and with you on the list.

Best,
Judi

I have the book also at my high school.

I am also a Catholic and am not real sure what the issue is about having this extremely well-reviewed book available to what I presume would be a diverse population in your school. It addresses what I expect would be peace and social justce issues that would be part of the curriculum— just as the point of view from a parent who spent thousands and thousands of dollars sending my own two kids through Catholic elementary school, high school and university. My daughter, a Univerisy of Dayton grad, recently rated it 5 stars on GoodReads.

It's a great book. I understand your administration (or some parents) may be uncomfortable with it, but it is a portrayal of things out kids need to understand. It shows all sides extremely well.

I am a school library media specialist. My principal has asked for a list of any Catholic high school that have the book entitled The Hate You Give in their collections. Also, do any of your schools teach this book as a part of the classroom curriculum, not just an extra credit reading choice? We would appreciate any input from you, and you may respond off the list if you prefer to email directly.

Thanks in advance,
