I reached out to one of our staff who helps with PD about diversity for our schools, here is her response:

It’s nice to hear that more and more people are looking for PD around diversity. If I’m reading the question correctly, it’s asking for book titles for teachers for their own PD as opposed to book titles for students. Is that correct? If so, one really good book we’ve pulled from is Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain by Zaretta Hammond. A lot of our PD info has come from this book, and it shares how we as educators can support diverse students.

Another really good book about different cultures is titled Culture Map by Erin Meyer. It is not specific to education (It has a lot of business examples) but discusses differences that exist across cultures and how understanding these differences can help us work better together.

Hope this helps,
Carolyn

Subject: [aisle] PD conversations on Race/ Religion

My elementary staff (5th/ 6th grade) is looking for summer PD books for a book study about race, religion etc in the classroom. Do you have any suggestions?
*we are a predominantly white/rural district, and we are creating diversity in our literature and curriculum.
