[aisle] Moving Books for New Carpet

Anne,

Do not use boxes. That’s too much work. Trust me, I did that once.

When my library had to be packed up for asbestos abatement, we rented book trucks (aka book carts) for the books. Everything was stored in order. It was simply lift and pivot. It was so much easier to load and unload. Shelf order was easily preserved. It must have saved us days of work.

I can’t find the vendor info in my emails. Check the archives from this list. I posted that info at that time.

Sincerely,

Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School

I've had to do this four times. I would add to the advice that you have already been given:

1. Color code and number your box labels by sections (green=nonfiction, orange=biography and so on) this makes it easier to find the box you need when unpacking.

2. Take pictures of the shelves and surfaces before you start packing- you would be amazed by how many times we used those as reminders of where things went.

3. Pack your boxes with the books flat, not standing up on edge. You probably won't be the person moving them in and out of the library. My custodians were great, but they were in a hurry and didn't care that the books inside the boxes might be damaged by the weight of the other boxes.

We always packed in reverse order (starting at the end of the shelf) so that we could unpack in the right order. My clerks and I took the time to think through the whole process and even practiced packing and unpacking boxes to make sure we had thoroughly thought through he entire process forward and backward.

We have to move out all of our books for new carpet this summer, and I’m pretty terrified of how this is going to work. Anyone have any suggestions for keeping the books in order? Maintenance staff will be moving them out and in.

Thanks!
