[aisle] Teacher Request

As I mentioned earlier, I've read the book. I read it a long time ago, and
I did booktalk the book to I believe 8th graders, maybe 7th, but my
recollection would be 8th.

I stand by what I said earlier. I don't think this would be a great choice
for a read aloud to 5th graders. They will mostly get lost, and probably be
bored because they won't understand what is going on. As an adult, I
remember getting a little lost myself!

If the teacher has very specific reasons for picking this book for her
class, I would be truly interested to know what they are. As I mentioned
before, I've found that a lot of teachers teach what they remember reading
because, frankly, a lot of them don't read new books. And by new, I mean
since they left school/college. I get it. If they don't know what to read,
it can be hard to know where to start.

I don't see any harm, as many have mentioned - myself included - in
recommending some titles that the librarian has read and feels confident
about in terms of broad appeal to the class. I don't see it as an issue to
use our expertise at knowing books and our students to help a teacher see a
broader field to pick from. I also don't see an issue with mentioning to
that teacher you aren't sure if that would be a great pick for the
students. It is a way to open up a dialog and find out why it is being
selected. I am often asked to make recommendations to teachers for read
alouds and other suggestions for their students. I feel it is a huge part
of my job and another reason why I read so many titles each year.

This is how you build relationships with teachers - even those in other
buildings - and show them how we can be a resource for them.

If, after this discussion, the teacher still wants to use the book, that is
their prerogative....and maybe next time they will ask for a
recommendation! :)
