[aisle] What Grades Go Into the Stacks?

Kindergarten chooses from a selection of books. First graders use shelf markers and have been checking out from a different library section each week. We’ve been rotating through picture books, easy readers, and nonfiction to make it easier to see if they’re using the shelf markers correctly and to make it easier for them to learn the best sections for age-appropriate books. Starting next week, first graders will be able to choose which section they choose their book from.

Students come to the library once per week for 30 minutes. We spend about 15 minutes on a mini lesson, and they have about 15 minutes to choose a book and check it out.

Right now both first graders and kindergarteners just check out one book, but normally first graders have been able to check out two books starting at the beginning of the year. It seems we’re doing a little bit of extra routine practice with the first graders because last year wasn’t a normal year.

Both first graders and kindergarteners will be able to choose two books for checkout after Christmas.

Subject: [aisle] What Grades Go Into the Stacks?

I know we've all discussed this in the past, but I honestly don't remember what anyone else is doing?

Do you have K & 1 going into the stacks to choose their library book?
Or do you put select books on a table for them to choose from?
If going into the stacks, do they use shelf markers?
How many books are in your collection or section that they are choosing from?

In your opinion, what do you think is best for K & 1?

Thank you in advance!
