[aisle] [External] High School Book Club

Our book club meets twice a week after school. We use both the Abe Lincoln Award Nominee list and the Read for a Lifetime list. I usually make a ballot when we start and have the students vote. Then I try to find funding so each student can have their own copy of a book, but in years past we have also used ILL. Only one book is required per month, but we do lots of activities on the meeting dates that we don't have a book due.

If you would like more information, I could send you some of the things we have done in the past.

I have done a Blind Date with a book, Book Speed Dating, Banned books week, Do I have that book challenge for the library, etc. anything to get the kids up and moving.

As for recruitment, I have had the students bring a friend. It might start small so don't stress over that. Over the years I have had groups from 4 -10 members, and they were great. This year we have a whopping 31, so it has definitely been an interesting year!

But libraries are about freedom. Freedom to read, freedom of ideas, freedom of communication. They are about education (which is not a process that finishes the day we leave school or university), about entertainment, about making safe spaces, and about access to information. - Neil Gaiman

Please be cautious: This email was sent from outside of our district.

We read from the Read for a Lifetime list through the Illinois Center for the Book. The list is great, there's a lot of overlap between that and the Lincoln list, and the kids get recognized by the Secretary of State at the end of the year. Plus they can add it as an accomplishment on their college apps. It's a natural selling point. :)

This is our third year doing it this way, and it has grown each year. We're a district with three high schools, and over the covid closures, our book clubs met as one group over zoom, which was pretty cool. We try to stay aligned. I'm proud of our book clubs.

Hope that helps!

I am attempting to start a book club at the high school level. This is my first year in this particular district, so I don't currently have a go-to group of students I can tap into getting this off the ground; I'm hoping this club will help me foster some strong relationships. For those of you who have spear-headed and lead a teen book club, please drop all of your advice in this thread. My plan is to recruit, promote, and choose our first title before the end of this semester and hold our first meeting in late January. Thanks in advance for the advice!
