[aisle] [EX] Reading to a Dog--Ideas for Family Night

I’m a school librarian but I also do educational animals shows. If anyone is interested in a unique Family Reading Night idea, I can provide animals so that each room would have an animal and the book could be a fiction book based on the animal and you could also read a simple nonfiction book based on the animal.
An example: The Skunk by Mac Barnett and my skunk Maxi would be able to sit on an adult’s lap while the story is read. Before switching to another room she could be petted by the children.

I have a large variety of animals and I’m USDA licensed and insured. www.incrediblebats.com

Many years ago I worked at a public library and we wrote a grant bringing therapy dogs into our 2 grade schools. It was awesome but be aware of allergies etc. for liability. We targeted a grade level to get to read to them, I think it was 2nd grade. If you are letting everyone come, how will you make sure you are covered for liability and dander stays in the carpets etc. If you have kids who are highly allergic they will be exposed from the dander after the program that is left on your carpets etc.. You might want to think about doing it outside at a later date since you're in a school. Please know I am a huge dog lover but see some potential issues that could affect a school.

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone has ever done an event like public libraries do where they bring in therapy dogs for kids to read to. If so, how many dogs did you have? How did you structure it? (i.e. how long could each child read with the dog…were they by themselves or were other kids or their families listening while they were reading…etc.) We are planning to do a family night in February where students can read to therapy dogs, do a craft, hear some dog-themed stories, and have a snack. Let me know if you have done something like this and have suggestions.
Thanks!
