[aisle] Excerpt from Wonder

Good picks Tracy!

Lisa, what grade(s) is this for & how long should the excerpt be?

The Rex & Higgins' ones are great for younger elementary & upper elementary would do really well with Sharon Draper's Out Of My Mind with a 5th grade main character.

Unless the teacher is very set on it, I would try to steer them away from Wonder. Palacio admitted that she never bothered talking to anyone with severe facial deformities before or during her writing of Wonder so I don't think it's the best choice for a good portrayal. If they refuse, a passage from either his first day or when he's in his Halloween costume & hears the other kids talking about him would be clear & succinct examples.

Hope this helps!

Is the teacher looking for mentor texts? Would Schools First Day of School by Adam Rex work? It's a picture book but it talks about how the school feels with multiple situations. Other titles with similar themes:
Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson
Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts
We Don't Eat our Classmates by Higgins (silly approach)

Hi!

I’m hoping someone can help with this teacher request using the book Wonder by Palacio.

During this lesson, students will first read an excerpt from a developmentally appropriate book that illustrates the potential emotional distress students can feel at school when a safe emotional climate has not been established.

I haven’t read this book in a long time!
Thank you!
