Have you checked out Dr. Debbie Reese’s blog, “American Indians in Children’s Literature<https://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/p/best-books.html>”? She has a wealth of information and reviews on Native Americans in children’s literature, from picture books to YA. You can look at her recommended lists as well as search books that you are curious about.

Apple (Skin to the Core), a YA verse memoir and Prinz Honor winner, about growing up Onondaga and the impact of residential schooling.

I really enjoyed If I Ever Get Out of Here by Eric Gansworth. Walking in Two Worlds by Wab Kinew was pretty good too.

I’ve never read Marrow Thieves, Hearts Unbroken or Apple in the Middle but I’ve seen them on a lot of lists.

There There by Tommy Orange is great but very heavy. I think it’s written for adults... and The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones was awesome but I think that may be adult as well.

Firekeeper’s Daughter is my absolute favorite of all of these though.

Hi!

I am currently reading Firekeeper's Daughter, which is amazing!, and I need more books written for YA audiences from the Native American perspective and voice. Can you recommend anything current?

Specifically, high school students.

Thank you,
Lori
