I split my library by reading levels: E = fiction picture books (E Fic
And); ER = early readers (like Mercy Watson or Owl Diaries -- ER Fic
And); and the 3-6th fiction is genrefied (Mystery, Horror, Sports,
Realistic, Historical, SciFi/Fantasy, Action/Adventure, and Graphic
Novels...each of these has Fic And plus a colored dot which symbolizes the
genre.)

Non-fiction is divided by age or reading level, too: K-2nd picture book
non-fic (E 398.2 And) and 3-6th non-fic (398.2 And).

I did not genrefy the fiction K-2nd materials since our goal is to have
students strengthen their beginner reader skills by reading widely.

Google "genrefying elementary school library" and you'll get a variety of
articles and websites to peruse!
