[ISLMA-Share] Authority of District Librarian

All,

I am staffed as a Lead Librarian. I manage the high school program and
oversee 5 elementary and 2 middle schools in the district, so essentially
this is a hybrid position. I attend monthly assistant principal and
principals meetings and also serve on the District Leadership Team where
all department heads meet with the Superintendent. I do not give
performance reviews and honestly would not want to have that
responsibility. I do participate in the hiring process and it's a joint
agreement for hire between the building administrator and I. I have a type
75 and working on my doctorate in Philosophy of Library Information Science
at Dominican.

We currently have four certified librarians and four paras. Two of the
non-certified librarians are interested in returning to school this fall to
begin working on their MLIS. Essentially I'm performing MLIS 101 for these
four which happens to be the issue with this job that annoys me the most,
especially when they don't want to listen and lack the respect of the
field. When incidents occur, I do have the support of the principal and
administration in correcting negative practice.

We just completed a district retrospective conversion project which was
quite tedious. All of the schools in the district are now circulating
books and for the first time in 8 years, students are checking out books
again. My motto throughout this process has been keeping God first,
excercise patience and listen to my body when it screams, 'I'm tired and I
need rest!.'

Hope this helps!

Best, K.C.
