[aisle] Names for student volunteer helpers in the library

Over the years, I have had high school students do:

· Shelving (I don’t shelve books hardly at all anymore)

· Cleaning

· processing new books (I catalog and print the labels) – they like getting first dibs on new stuff

o barcode and spine labels

o Mylar or KAPCO covers (some are better at this than others, but I’ve had awesome success with students doing it)

o property stamping

o date due slips

· Straightening shelves

· Running errands

· Setting up/creating book displays

· Check the sign in sheet against the library pass list for study hall students

· Check out books – I don’t do this a lot, and there is always a serious discussion of privacy and confidentiality before I do, but sometimes, I just need to work away from the circulation desk. I put them on a device that I have set up to login with minimal access to files and minimal access within Destiny once logged in.

The trick is finding what they are good at. Some students cover one book with a KAPCO cover, and then I never let them touch it again (but they can stick on all the labels!). LOL! Others do a better job than I do!

I’ve had a situation where my school didn’t have study halls, so library helper was a “class” that they got credit for and had to have an A/B average to apply for spots, but also where they were just volunteering out of their study hall. I’ve taken special education students in some transitional work skills placements who are at a variety of skill levels. There are lots of things they can do and want to do, so you just have to figure out what you want your program to look like.

I'm new in the library this year. What responsibilities do high school students usually have when helping in the library/media center? I would love a chance to work with kids and give them more responsibility and ownership in the library, but I'm still learning the ropes and still working on student buy-in given that we have few teachers who support advocating for literacy and collaborating with me.

One of my kids made these badges one year which I thought were cute. He was always clear that HE was the commanding officer. He was a senior in high school, by the way. LOL

Hello,

Does anyone have any creative names for students who help out in the library?

My students have been called Library Helpers for a while because creativity in words is not always my strong suit and they want to be called something else which I said is fine, but they can't come up with anything either!

They are volunteer students who have specific library jobs and give up part of their lunch work time to do this.
They are also in the yearbook with this name.

Thanks in advance!
