[aisle] HS Library Student Assistants - activities/responsibilities

My student library aides are all seniors, and I usually have 1-3 per school
year. They shelve, check books out to students, help process books, and
check in orders.
During the 2nd semester, I allow them to help choose a few books
for the library. I will tell them a set amount of money or number of
books, and they can choose titles to add to the collection. I keep an
enormous Amazon wish list of books I'm considering that have positive
professional reviews and they pick from those. This year, because I have a
highly motivated student (she started her own used book pop up shop!) I
also let her look at other titles and then helped her find professional
reviews for them. She read the reviews and then we talked about them
together and decided if they were good options for our library or not. I
also have the students pick out at least one book that they might not read
personally, but is of a topic that has been in demand when they are working
in the library, to help them understand that as a librarian, you need to
think of your patrons and not just what you may like to read.
When the books the student library aides select arrive, we make a
big display of them in the library for students to check out. They also
have the option to include a "selected by" book plate inside each book.
They are always very enthusiastic about help choose books for the
collection.
