[aisle] Books returned at the end of the year

Good morning Stephanie,

That's actually something that should have been decided back in August. Before the year starts, I send the last day to my administration for approval. We've worked together for almost a decade now, so it is just a rubberstamp at this point. The advantage of chatting with your administration is you get to exchange ideas. So with that, here's what we did.

We did Backwards By Design. We counted from the end of the year to create a due date. We also used that to establish the needs for summer hours. We also use it to establish what needs to be done to get the books back. Here's our findings.

  * After the school year, a fee letter is sent home. This is only possible because I get a few paid summer hours and bring in a bunch of volunteers to stuff envelopes (and other tasks). If this was not a possibility, the cutoff date would have been sooner.
  * It takes 5 days for an overdue letter to get home via US mail and we want it to arrive before the end of the school year.
  * During the school year, it takes us 2 days to stuff the envelopes.
  * It takes a day to print the letters/labels.
  * It takes 2 days to print and distribute letters via ELA classes. This is done before we do the mailing. This is done the first day after the ceiling date.
  * It takes a second to send notices to students via email. This is done the day of the ceiling date.

The results for this year are/were:

  * 8th grade will need to return items on Friday, May 6, 2022.
  * 6th/7th grade will need to return items on Friday, May 13, 2022.
  *   Faculty's will be on May 20, 2022.

Our last day is May 27 for 6th and 7th graders and May 24th for our 8th graders.

I hope this helps.

Enjoying book repo,
Alan

Two weeks here as well. Gives us time to get stragglers back and then we have textbooks coming back the next two weeks (seniors the first week and the remainder the very last). We do let a few go out after the deadline to our avid readers under the stipulation that they come back asap.

Ours are due 5 days before the end of the school year. We do inventory at the end of April or early May because the checked out books are accounted for in the inventory anyway.

Hi,

When do you require books to be due at the end of the year? One week before the last day? Two weeks before the last day? I'm just trying to make a decision. :)

Thanks,
