[aisle] Reading to a Dog--Ideas for Family Night

We just had a Family Literacy Night in November at which we hosted 9
therapy dogs. The dogs were in classrooms and the other activities were in
our multipurpose room, library and meeting room. The students had to
pre-sign up for a time slot. With the number of students who signed up,
each student wound up being able to read and interact with the dog and its
owner for 15 minutes. The students and their parents/siblings were in the
classrooms with the dog, the owner and a teacher, so they had some privacy
while reading. Other activities included make a bookmark, story writing, a
read aloud, and a pick-a-free book station. The dogs were definitely the
big hit of the night. It was the first time that we hosted therapy dogs,
but the owners gave us positive feedback and said the event was run
smoothly -- so I would recommend that students sign up for a reading slot
ahead of time.
